In May 2023, the FDA approved a new treatment called SkinVive by Juvederm. This hyaluronic acid microdroplet injectable is the first skin booster approved in the United States. SkinVive improves skin smoothness, increases hydration, and enhances overall skin appearance, with benefits lasting up to six months.
Skin boosters have been popular in Europe and Canada, where fans say they create a glowing “glass skin” look and reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles.1
What Is SkinVive?
According to the manufacturer’s website, SkinVive is “The first and only hyaluronic acid microdroplet injectable indicated to improve cheek skin smoothness.”2 Hyaluronic acid is a moisturizing ingredient that’s used in a wide variety of topical skincare products, as well as injectable fillers. As an injectable treatment, it has a long record of safety and is effective at adding volume to skin.
SkinVive is approved for injection into the cheeks. Your doctor will do a series of shallow injections, placing the product between the layers of skin. In the weeks after treatment, SkinVive diffuses into an even layer throughout the face. It then boosts hydration in the skin, making skin look fuller and smoother. It also stimulates collagen production, which naturally plumps the skin.3
Is SkinVive a Dermal Filler?
While the FDA classifies SkinVive as a dermal filler, it has some differences from typical fillers. Products such as Juvederm and Restylane have a gel-like consistency. They are meant to be injected into a specific area and stay in place. They provide volume just in the area where they are injected.
SkinVive is a thinner solution, and it’s meant to spread out from the injection site. Instead of producing noticeable volume in a specific location, it adds a layer of hydration throughout the entire face. There is no change to the structure of the face like there would be with fillers in the lips, cheekbones, or jawline. There is also no change to how muscles work, the way there is with Botox or other neuromodulators.4
The treatment takes less than 30 minutes, and you can resume normal activities immediately. SkinVive results include increased smoothness and improved skin tone across the whole face.
How Long Does SkinVive Last?
In one clinical trial with 209 participants, the results of SkinVive lasted for at least six months. The product has only been available since September 2023, so there isn’t a lot of anecdotal information about how long the effects last.5
Costs for SkinVive will vary, but you can expect to pay between $750 and $1,200 per syringe.6
