Aging is a natural process. With the passage of time, it’s inevitable for your youthful, supple skin to turn saggy and wrinkly. As you age, your skin loses volume, turning thinner and drier. However, with the development of medical technology, this is no longer an unalterable condition. Today, many dermal fillers are available to restore your skin volume. So many, in fact, that you may be spoiled for choice and find it tricky to figure out which one best suits you.

This article discusses two dermal fillers — Juvederm Voluma and Volbella — and compares their uses, indications, and other data to help you identify the perfect filler for your skincare needs.

What is Juvederm Voluma Used For?

Juvéderm® Voluma™ XC is an injectable gel (dermal filler), which can be deeply injected into the cheek area to fix the volume loss brought about by age. It can also be used in the chin area to enhance the chin profile.1

This substance consists of crosslinked hyaluronic acid made by Streptococcus bacteria. The typical formulation includes 20 mg/mL along with 0.3% of lidocaine (a drug), which acts as a local anesthetic.2

Once Voluma is injected into the facial tissue, particularly the mid-facial area, it can temporarily add fullness and volume to the face. In fact, 56% of people who used Voluma exhibited an improved chin profile within 6 months, according to a clinical study.3

What is Juvederm Volbella Used For?

Juvéderm® Volbella™ XC is also an injectable gel (dermal or soft tissue filler), which can be injected into the lip area for supplementing the lips and reducing the lines around the mouth. Furthermore, it has recently been approved for use under the eye to improve appearance and decrease volume loss.4

This product also consists of crosslinked hyaluronic acid made by Streptococcus bacteria. The typical formulation includes 15 mg/mL along with 0.3% of lidocaine (a drug), which acts as a numbing agent.5

When injected into or around the lips, it provides a temporary boost in volume and fullness while smoothening out fine lines. When injected under the eyes, it reduces darkness and hollowness while increasing volume.6

Volbella may require multiple treatments to be fully effective, and the results are expected to last for up to 12 months.7

Voluma vs. Volbella

Both Voluma and Volbella are approved for use in adults over the age of 21 years.8

Although, they’re both not recommended for people who have a history of allergies to bacterial proteins or lidocaine.9

Because Voluma has a higher concentration of hyaluronic acid than Volbella (20 vs 15 mg/mL), it’s more effective in creating volume over bony surfaces like the cheeks and chin. However, it’s not suitable for use in smaller and petite areas like the lips because of its thicker consistency, which wouldn’t give these areas a natural appearance.10

On the other hand, Volbella — with its lower hyaluronic acid concentration and thinner consistency — is ideal for more delicate surfaces like the lips and under-eyes. But it’s not meant for use in larger areas like the cheeks because it doesn’t have sufficient lifting capacity for such big areas.11

Thus, Voluma and Volbella have varied effects and are intended for use in completely different areas of the face. Overall, Voluma can give the cheek and chin portions of your face a more vigorously youthful appearance, while Volbella can give your lips a softer, more natural-looking fullness.

Therefore, it’s important to discuss your expectations of the filler treatment with your injector in advance. Having clarity about your areas of concern will make it easier to match you with the right products and ensure that you obtain your desired results.
